Reporting to the Senior Manager, Food Procurement, the Strategic Sourcing Manager is responsible for sourcing surplus, unsold food for donation from midstream and upstream suppliers, including producers, processors, manufacturers, distributors, and wholesalers. This new position within the Food Procurement team will develop, implement, and maintain a strategic food donor acquisition and retention plan and foster strong relationships with food donors and work closely with the Ontario Operations team to arrange the redistribution of food products to our non-profit network.
We are looking for an adaptive, strategic, and charismatic team player who can hit the ground running and work efficiently and collaboratively to build and maintain strong relationships with food donors to help meet our annual food-raising goals.
- Research and identify new sources of food and actively recruit new donors with the goal to increase the quantity, quality, and efficiency of food donations.
- Continuously improve on Second Harvest’s food donor landscape by developing and implementing strategies for attracting and retaining food donors.
- Develop and manage a food donation acquisition program that effectively incorporates the motivators and needs of food suppliers to participate in surplus food rescue programs.
- Conduct cold calls and follow-up on referrals.
- Engage lapsed donors as well as donors who are decreasing their food donation support to ensure consistent food donations.
- Help develop and implement a food donor retention plan that celebrates and retains food donors by ensuring appropriate donor stewardship and recognition.
- Deliver presentations and participate in speaking engagements with businesses with the goal of increasing food donor acquisition and retention; track outreach activities, record touchpoints, and collect donor feedback.
- Participate in the development of overall food sourcing and food distribution strategies and policies.
- Implement ongoing quality and efficiency improvements.
- Create various reports on food procurement as requested.
- Attend food industry trade shows/conferences and network with potential food donors.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned to support the overall goals of the organization.

- Analytical: data is your friend; you can translate numbers into action and pave the way for efficiency.
- Minimum 3 years experience within the food industry. Sourcing, procurement, or sales experience preferred.
- Experience working or volunteering in the non-profit sector is an asset.
- Interest in sustainability, food rescue, and hunger relief.
- Outstanding ability to work independently with exceptional time management skills.
- Capacity to work flexible hours and travel across Canada. Valid Class G driver’s license and able to travel for long distance meetings (mileage compensated if using own vehicle).
- *Bilingualism is an asset.
