Join us at Second Harvest’s flagship classroom in South Etobicoke — or bring us to your school — for a dynamic, hands-on learning experience. Our Grade 3 Visiting Schools Food Waste Education Program introduces students to the importance of reducing food waste and its impact on the environment and communities. The lessons align with Ontario curriculum in social studies and science expectations.
Each activity station is designed to help students develop critical thinking skills, environmental awareness and a sense of social responsibility.
Through a series of five interactive learning stations, students explore:
What is food rescue and why does it matter?
How food waste affects our planet.
Why fruits and vegetables of all shapes and sizes are worth loving.
Fun activities like Mad Libs and matching games deepen understanding.
Practical steps students can take to reduce waste at school and at home.
Our program aligns with the Ontario Grade 3 Social Studies Curriculum, with a key focus on community and environment responsibility.
Students engage in inquiry-based learning, use problem-solving skills and reflect on their personal and community responsibilities in creating a sustainable future.
Expectations the programming aligns with:
Understand how communities develop sustainable practices and how traditions influence food habits (e.g., food preservation)
Explore how communities make decisions about resources, including food, and the impacts of waste on local environments.
(Please note prices do not include transportation to Second Harvest’s Etobicoke location. Discount available for multiple bookings or high-priority schools — inquire for details.)
All program revenue supports Second Harvest’s work of rescuing and redistributing healthy, surplus food to community food programs across Canada.
Your support also helps us offer free or subsidized educational programming to equity deserving communities.
