Every lunch, an invitation to camp

“The kids come to camp more frequently,” shared Ashley Mofa, program manager at the Lady Ballers Centre, “because they have access to food.”

Since 2000, Second Harvest’s Feeding Our Future program has supported summer camps across the GTA with nutritious lunches and snacks.

One of those camps is run by the Lady Ballers Centre in Toronto, a welcoming space where girls are encouraged to reach their full potential. Their programs seek to remove gender, racial and economic barriers and foster social change through accessibility, inclusivity and advocacy.

Ashley shared that since the pandemic, more families have been facing financial challenges, making transportation and access to healthy food even harder.

“The girls get to eat breakfast, have something in the morning, and they are fed throughout the day,” she explained.

Food is what gets them through the door, and once inside, campers find a safe space to “grow, learn and discover a real sense of self.”

This summer, thanks to the addition of a new electric vehicle and the incredible support of our community and corporate volunteers, Second Harvest was able to deliver 37,540 lunches to 22 camps across the GTA – thank you.

“Food is one of the main priorities, right?” Ashley reflected, “to have a program like this support our camp is just a wish come true.”
