From July 3 to July 15 this year, Second Harvest once again took part in the vibrant Calgary Stampede, one of Canada’s most beloved summer celebrations.
At our educational booth in the Agricultural Centre, we connected with Stampede-goers of all ages, challenging them to test their knowledge about food waste and learn how we can all play a role in reducing it.
We were honoured to receive a generous $25,000 donation from our national partner, the Shania Twain Foundation. This marked the first of five contributions Shania made to Second Harvest during her Canadian tour, supporting our mission to rescue and redistribute surplus food across the country.
When the Stampede wrapped up, our team rescued more than 10,800lbs of surplus food, including produce, dairy, meat, condiments and desserts, all of which was delivered to the Community Kitchen Program of Calgary.
Additional donations collected and redistributed throughout the event included 450 lbs of buns and prepared meals delivered to Hope Mission on July 10, and 9 pallets of apple juice, coordinated with the Stampede Breakfast Committee, delivered to the Calgary Food Bank on July 15.
Thanks to strong Stampede spirit and community support, surplus food was shared with those who needed it. We’re grateful to everyone who made it happen.
